Suburban Essex Magazine, March 2003, section ‘Dining Out,’ page 53, article: “In the Mood at Indigo Smoke,” author Grace Russell
“Propelled by a freezing wind at our backs, my guest and I sought the warm Southern refuge of Montclair’s Indigo Smoke, popular local chef Lance Knowling’s salute to the food of his youth. …
Kansas City barbecue style involves slowly smoking the meats and sealing in the juices, before grilling. …
Rib lovers’ biggest decision … will be between the $15 pork Baby Back Ribs and the $16 Beef Ribs. Each is smoked and cooked to perfection and topped with Knowling’s tangy barbecue sauce.”

Downtown and Around Montclair (from Vicinity Publications, Inc.), Spring 2004 issue, page 8, article: “The Wide World of Dining – Close to Home,” author Claudia Sidoti
“Good Ol’ Country Comfort
While trendy is good for some diners, for others, comfort is better, and it’s possible that no Montclair restaurant does comfort better than Indigo Smoke. Here, comfort food is coupled with a cozy atmosphere … New City Soul dishes like Indigo spare ribs, smothered pork chops, wood grilled catfish, or the ultimate meatloaf draw comfort food aficionados in crowds. And that’s not to mention southern country classics like mac & cheese, homemade biscuits or black eyed peas.”
The Positive Community, September 2006, Vol 7, No. 1, page 18, article: “Indigo Smoke’s Kansas City Sizzle,” author Rev. Theresa Nance, pastor of The Church by the Side of the Road, Passaic, NJ
“Indigo Smoke. Yes, that’s what it’s called. And, for those who have not yet trekked to the lower end of Bloomfield Avenue in the Township of Montclair, NJ, I urge you to run don’t walk to this marvelous treasure.
Indigo Smoke offers a variety of mouth-watering food, including soul food. How do I rate the cuisine? In a word, delicious! But above and beyond the menu, the restaurant offers smooth jazz in the persons of gifted vocalists and musicians. I love it!
Truth be told, I accidentally ran up on this establishment while looking for another place to dine. I have not been disappointed. They are open 7-days a week and the Sunday brunch brings in not only the church crowd, but also those who just want to relax and enjoy in an ambience that’s conducive to a good time. A number of members of my church and I have made a beeline to the hip place after our morning church service. My family and I have done the same. I would describe it as an upscale eatery with a wait staff that is courteous and attentive. No, the folks at Indigo Smoke didn’t ask me to write this column. Even though I’m happy to see the folks there carry our publication, The Positive Community, I never go into any place as a journalist, unless I’m working on a specific story. That way, we all can relax and have a good time.”
